01The answer first

In short

Nigeria’s GDP per person is the higher of the two: Ghana 7,358 and Nigeria 8,145 international dollars at purchasing power parity (World Bank Group, 2025).

Nigeria has 6.7 times as many people, and 4.0 times the land area.

Measured as places in each statistic’s own field, the two are furthest apart on DTP3 vaccination coverage (99 and 62, WUENIC 2025), forest area change (0.52 and -0.71, FAO 2025) and water stress (0.48 and 29.71, FAO 2023). They are closest on frontier technology readiness (0.396 and 0.393, UNCTAD 2023), water-use efficiency (34.66 and 33.84, FAO 2023) and lower secondary completion rate (65.2 and 66.83, UIS 2025).

For 60 of the 352 shared statistics the newest readings describe different years. Those rows print both years and are left out of every comparison above.

Nothing here counts the statistics on which one country is placed higher than the other: such a count would weigh a minor survey question the same as life expectancy. The one overall answer this site gives is the Country Index 2026, below.

08Method

Sources and how to read them

Every value is the newest reading the publisher issued, exactly as each country’s profile prints it: Ghana and Nigeria. A rank is a number the publisher printed; a position · derived is this site’s ordering of one published statistic; a standing is a place in the Country Index 2026.

Where a publisher compiles each country’s latest survey, the two readings can describe different years. Both years are then printed, and the row is left out of every comparison in the summary. How every number on the site is read is set out on the methodology page.
