About China

China descends from west to east in three great steps. The highest is the Tibetan Plateau, walled in by the Himalayas and the Kunlun Mountains, where the Yangtze, the Yellow River and the Mekong begin. Below it lie the basins, grasslands and deserts of the north and centre, including the Gobi and the Taklamakan. The lowest step is the eastern plain, where the rivers reach the sea and most people live. Winters in the north are cold and dry; the south is subtropical and green.

Chinese civilisation took shape along the Yellow River, and written records reach back more than three thousand years to the oracle bones of the Shang dynasty. In 221 BC the state of Qin conquered its rivals and imposed one script, coinage and system of weights. Later dynasties, from the Han and Tang to the Ming and Qing, governed through scholar-officials chosen by examination. The last emperor abdicated in 1912, the People’s Republic was proclaimed in 1949, and reforms from 1978 opened the country to private enterprise.

Most people are Han Chinese, alongside dozens of recognised minority nationalities. Spoken Chinese varies so widely, from Cantonese to Wu and Min, that neighbouring provinces can struggle to understand one another, yet all share one written script. Regional cooking runs from Sichuan’s numbing peppercorns to Cantonese dim sum. Factories in the Pearl River and Yangtze deltas make electronics, steel, ships, solar panels and electric cars, and high-speed railways link the large cities.

02Country Index 2026

Where it stands, topic by topic

Strongest first. Each position is China’s place among the countries with a standing on that topic, built from a few key statistics chosen to measure different things.

All topics

Each standing is built from a few key statistics chosen to measure different things. Select a subject for China’s readings on it, or see every statistic held for China in the table further down this page.

03Highs and lows

Where China stands out

The two ends of its own record: every statistic on which China sits within ten places of the best or worst in the world, plus its strongest and weakest readings overall. Each is turned into a percentile — its place among every country measured — which is what lets a hunger score and a press-freedom rank be compared at all.

Sources and how to read them

How to read this page

  • The scores and ranks belong to their publishers. Nothing is adjusted, rescaled or re-ranked; each is reproduced from the edition named beside it. Where a row says position · derived, the publisher ranks nobody on that measure and the position is ours, made by ordering the published score.
  • Each statistic shows its newest edition, which is not always the edition the Country Index uses: the index pins every source to one data year so its average compares like with like.

How a standing is built from percentiles, why China can move because other countries moved, and why publishers measure between 120 and 215 countries each are set out in full in how a standing is made and what a standing cannot tell you.
