01The country
Pakistan lies in South Asia, stretching from the Arabian Sea in the south to high mountain ranges in the north, including the Hindu Kush. The Indus River flows through the length of the country, and its plains in Punjab and Sindh form the agricultural heartland. To the west lie the dry plateaus and mountains of Balochistan, and the Thar Desert lies in the south-east. Climates range from alpine in the north to hot and arid in the south. Islamabad is the capital, and Karachi, Lahore, Faisalabad, Rawalpindi and Peshawar are major cities. Urdu is the national language and English is also official, while Punjabi, Sindhi, Pashto and Balochi are widely spoken.
The region was home to the Indus Valley Civilisation, whose city of Mohenjo-daro is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and later to the Gandhara culture and the Mughal Empire. Pakistan became independent from British rule in 1947. The country is known for sites such as the Lahore Fort and the Badshahi Mosque, for Sufi shrines, qawwali music and its cuisine, and for its love of cricket. Its economy includes agriculture, textiles and clothing, manufacturing and services.

03Highs and lows
The two ends of its own record: every statistic on which Pakistan sits within ten places of the best or worst in the world, plus its strongest and weakest readings overall. Each is turned into a percentile — its place among every country measured — which is what lets a hunger score and a press-freedom rank be compared at all.
