The spread
138 countries, one dot each, on one scale — further right is a higher value. Half the countries are above 2.62335; a quarter are above 3.08398, and a quarter below 2.13352. The bar in each row marks that continent’s middle country.

Every country
In order, highest value first — rank 1 is the highest value, the way WRI’s own tables read. “=” marks a rank shared with another country. Higher is worse, and the rank is the World Resources Institute's own. Much of the arid world is missing — the source gives no score for many desert countries — so a country's absence is not a sign of low risk.

About drought risk
Drought risk combines how likely droughts are with how many people, livestock and crops they would hit and how vulnerable those are, scored from 0 to 5 by the World Resources Institute. It is a risk, not a record of droughts that happened.
What the number is: Drought risk score (0–5).

Iceland, at 0.55303, among the 138 countries compared in 2019.
Which country has the highest drought risk?
Moldova, at 4.08091, among the 138 countries compared in 2019.
How many countries does the Drought Risk (Aqueduct) cover?
138 in 2019.
What is the world average drought risk?

Where does the data come from, and can I download it?
From World Resources Institute (WRI), under CC BY (Creative Commons Attribution). From the World Resources Institute's Aqueduct 4.0 country rankings. WRI cautions that its risk indicators are modelled and cannot be validated by direct measurement. Its projections to 2030, 2050 and 2080 are not used. Every edition is on this site’s Datasets pages as a full table, and downloads as a CSV file with every value unrounded.

How this page reads the numbers
- The rank is World Resources Institute (WRI)’s own, as published.
- Which end is better follows the publisher’s own reading of the measure.
- A country is named at an end only when it holds that value alone. Where several share it, the page says how many and names none first.
- Values are stored exactly as published and trimmed only for display. “The middle country” is the median of the countries measured, not a world average.
The file itself, column by column — where it came from, what each column holds, and every edition as a CSV — is on its dataset page.
