01The country
Brazil is the largest country in South America, occupying much of the eastern part of the continent along a long Atlantic coastline. The Amazon River and its rainforest dominate the north, the Pantanal wetlands lie in the west, and the Brazilian Highlands cover much of the centre and south-east. Most of the country has a tropical climate, becoming subtropical in the south. Brasília, a planned city inaugurated in 1960, is the capital, while São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Salvador and Belo Horizonte are among its major cities. Portuguese is the official language, and the country’s peoples have Indigenous, European, African and Asian roots.
Home to many Indigenous peoples, the territory became a Portuguese colony in the sixteenth century. Brazil declared independence in 1822 as an empire and became a republic in 1889. The country is known for its music, including samba and bossa nova, for its Carnival celebrations, for football, and for the biodiversity of the Amazon and the Atlantic Forest. Its economy includes agriculture, such as coffee, soya and sugar cane, together with mining, energy, manufacturing and services.
As Wikidata records them. Official languages are the least consistent — some countries list only a national language, others every regional one. Sources and licences.

03Highs and lows
The two ends of its own record: every statistic on which Brazil sits within ten places of the best or worst in the world, plus its strongest and weakest readings overall. Each is turned into a percentile — its place among every country measured — which is what lets a hunger score and a press-freedom rank be compared at all.
In the top third of all countries measured. 2 are within ten places of the best in the world, in a field of at least 50 countries — marked with that place.
