About Peru

Peru is three lands laid side by side. A strip of desert follows the whole Pacific shore, kept almost rainless by the cold Humboldt Current and crossed by green river valleys. Behind it the Andes rise to the ice of the Cordillera Blanca, crowned by Huascarán. East of the mountains, more than half the country is Amazon rainforest; near Iquitos, a city reached only by river or air, the Marañón and the Ucayali join to form the Amazon.

By about 2600 BC the people of Caral were raising stone pyramids, and later cultures left the Nazca lines, the royal tombs of Sipán and the mud-brick city of Chan Chan. In barely a century the Inca of Cusco built an empire running along the Andes from Quito to central Chile. Francisco Pizarro seized the emperor Atahualpa at Cajamarca in 1532, and Andean silver flowed to Spain. José de San Martín declared independence in July 1821; victory at Ayacucho in 1824 ended Spanish rule.

Potatoes were first farmed in these mountains, and highland markets sell hundreds of kinds. Ceviche, raw fish cured in lime, rules the coast, and Chinese and Japanese immigrants added chifa and Nikkei cooking. The cajón, a box drum, came out of Afro-Peruvian music. Mario Vargas Llosa received the Nobel for literature in 2010. Andean mines produce copper, gold, silver and zinc, anchoveta from the cold sea becomes fishmeal, and irrigated desert valleys grow asparagus, grapes and blueberries.

02Country Index 2026

Where it stands, topic by topic

Strongest first. Each position is Peru’s place among the countries with a standing on that topic, built from a few key statistics chosen to measure different things.

Each standing is built from a few key statistics chosen to measure different things. Select a subject for Peru’s readings on it, or see every statistic held for Peru in the table further down this page.

03Highs and lows

Where Peru stands out

The two ends of its own record: every statistic on which Peru sits within ten places of the best or worst in the world, plus its strongest and weakest readings overall. Each is turned into a percentile — its place among every country measured — which is what lets a hunger score and a press-freedom rank be compared at all.

07Method

Sources and how to read them

How to read this page

  • The scores and ranks belong to their publishers. Nothing is adjusted, rescaled or re-ranked; each is reproduced from the edition named beside it. Where a row says position · derived, the publisher ranks nobody on that measure and the position is ours, made by ordering the published score.
  • Each statistic shows its newest edition, which is not always the edition the Country Index uses: the index pins every source to one data year so its average compares like with like.

How a standing is built from percentiles, why Peru can move because other countries moved, and why publishers measure between 120 and 215 countries each are set out in full in how a standing is made and what a standing cannot tell you.
