01The country
Germany lies in central Europe, stretching from the North Sea and the Baltic Sea in the north to the Alps in the south. Between them lie the North German Plain, forested uplands such as the Black Forest and the Harz, and river valleys along the Rhine, the Elbe and the Danube. The climate is temperate, with milder winters near the coast and colder ones in the south and east. Berlin is the capital, and Hamburg, Munich, Cologne and Frankfurt are major cities. German is the national language, and the country is organised as a federation of sixteen states.
For centuries the German-speaking lands were divided among many states within the Holy Roman Empire, and a unified German Empire was founded in 1871. After the Second World War the country was divided into two states, which were reunited in 1990. Germany is known for its composers, philosophers and scientists, for its castles, cathedrals and Christmas markets, and for its engineering tradition. Its economy is built on manufacturing, particularly cars, machinery and chemicals, together with a large services sector and exports.

03Highs and lows
The two ends of its own record: every statistic on which Germany sits within ten places of the best or worst in the world, plus its strongest and weakest readings overall. Each is turned into a percentile — its place among every country measured — which is what lets a hunger score and a press-freedom rank be compared at all.
In the top third of all countries measured. 19 are within ten places of the best in the world, in a field of at least 50 countries — marked with that place.
