Every country

In order, highest value first. No rank or position is shown: too many countries share the same value for an order to mean anything. This is what people report about themselves, not a medical diagnosis or a measured rate of illness. Whether people recognise anxiety and depression, and are willing to tell an interviewer about them, differs from country to country, so a low share may mean less distress or more silence. That is why the page treats neither end as better and orders no country. One country in the survey was not asked the question and is left out rather than shown as zero.

06The measure

About experience of anxiety or depression

This is the share of adults who say they have, at some point in their lives, been so anxious or depressed that they could not carry on their usual daily activities for two weeks or longer. It comes from the mental-health module of the Wellcome Global Monitor 2020, a survey of about a thousand people in each country carried out by Gallup for the Wellcome Trust.

What the number is: People aged 15+ who have ever been too anxious or depressed to continue their usual activities for two weeks or more (%).

Experience of anxiety or depression: questions and answers

Which country has the highest experience of anxiety or depression?

Peru, at 49.350%, among the 112 countries compared in 2020.

Which country has the lowest experience of anxiety or depression?

Taiwan, at 2.934%, among the 112 countries compared in 2020.

How many countries does the Adults Who Have Been Too Anxious or Depressed to Carry On cover?

112 in 2020.

What is the world average experience of anxiety or depression?

This site does not calculate a world average, which would depend on how countries are weighted. In the middle country of the 112 compared in 2020, the figure was 20.053%.

Is this Wellcome Trust’s own ranking?

No ranking is shown. Wellcome Trust publishes values only, and too many countries share the same value for an ordering to mean anything, so none is derived.

How often is the Adults Who Have Been Too Anxious or Depressed to Carry On published?

This site holds one edition, describing 2020.

Where does the data come from, and can I download it?

From Wellcome Trust, under CC BY 4.0. From Wellcome's own crosstab workbook for the 2020 mental-health module: the weighted share answering yes, with people who did not know or refused to answer included in the base. Every edition is on this site’s Datasets pages as a full table, and downloads as a CSV file with every value unrounded.

How this page reads the numbers

  • No rank or position is shown: Wellcome Trust publishes values only, and too many countries share the same value for an ordering to mean anything.
  • This statistic has no better end, so the page describes higher and lower values and never calls a country a leader.
  • A country is named at an end only when it holds that value alone. Where several share it, the page says how many and names none first.
  • Values are stored exactly as published and trimmed only for display. “The middle country” is the median of the countries measured, not a world average.

The file itself, column by column — where it came from, what each column holds, and every edition as a CSV — is on its dataset page.
