01The country

About Romania

The Carpathians bend through Romania in a wide arc, closing round the high plateau of Transylvania like the rim of a bowl. Outside the curve lie the farm plains of Wallachia and Moldavia. The Danube marks most of the southern border, cuts through the Iron Gates gorge and ends in a delta of reed beds and floating islands where pelicans breed. Moldoveanu, in the Făgăraș range, is the highest summit. Winters bring hard frost.

The Dacians held these hills until Trajan’s legions conquered them in AD 106, a campaign carved in spiral relief on his column in Rome. In the Middle Ages the principalities of Wallachia and Moldavia rose under rulers such as Vlad III and Stephen the Great, often as Ottoman vassals, while Transylvania answered to Hungary and later the Habsburgs. The principalities united in 1859 and declared independence in 1877; Transylvania joined them in 1918. Communist rule ended with Nicolae Ceaușescu’s overthrow in December 1989.

Orthodox Christianity is the faith of most Romanians, and the monastery churches of Bucovina are painted inside and out with saints and Last Judgements. Sarmale, cabbage leaves rolled round minced pork, come with mămăligă, cornmeal boiled thick and cut with a thread. Romanians call Mihai Eminescu their national poet, and Constantin Brâncuși reshaped modern sculpture; Nadia Comăneci scored the first perfect mark in Olympic gymnastics in 1976. Dacia builds cars at Mioveni, Constanța ships Black Sea cargo, and the plains grow wheat, maize and sunflowers.

02Country Index 2026

Where it stands, topic by topic

Strongest first. Each position is Romania’s place among the countries with a standing on that topic, built from a few key statistics chosen to measure different things.

Each standing is built from a few key statistics chosen to measure different things. Select a subject for Romania’s readings on it, or see every statistic held for Romania in the table further down this page.

Where Romania stands out

The two ends of its own record: every statistic on which Romania sits within ten places of the best or worst in the world, plus its strongest and weakest readings overall. Each is turned into a percentile — its place among every country measured — which is what lets a hunger score and a press-freedom rank be compared at all.

07Method

Sources and how to read them

How to read this page

  • The scores and ranks belong to their publishers. Nothing is adjusted, rescaled or re-ranked; each is reproduced from the edition named beside it. Where a row says position · derived, the publisher ranks nobody on that measure and the position is ours, made by ordering the published score.
  • Each statistic shows its newest edition, which is not always the edition the Country Index uses: the index pins every source to one data year so its average compares like with like.

How a standing is built from percentiles, why Romania can move because other countries moved, and why publishers measure between 120 and 215 countries each are set out in full in how a standing is made and what a standing cannot tell you.

Sources

  • Statistics: 62 publishers, each named beside its numbers, with every edition and licence on the datasets pages.
