In order, highest value first. No rank or position is shown: too many countries share the same value for an order to mean anything. Neither end is ranked as better here. Rich resource exporters such as Australia and Norway are as commodity-dependent as some of the poorest countries, and the least dependent include large manufacturing exporters. The agricultural, energy and mining shares beside the headline show which kind of commodity a country relies on.

08The measure
About commodity export dependence
Commodity export dependence is the share of a country's merchandise exports that comes from raw commodities — farm produce, oil, gas and coal, and minerals, ores and metals. UNCTAD calls a country commodity-dependent when that share is above 60 per cent, because its export earnings then rise and fall with world commodity prices.
What the number is: Commodity exports (% of merchandise exports, three-year average).

11Questions
Commodity export dependence: questions and answers
Which country has the highest commodity export dependence?
Chad, at 99.771%, among the 191 countries compared in 2024.
Which country has the lowest commodity export dependence?
Bangladesh, at 4.605%, among the 191 countries compared in 2024.
How many countries does the Commodity Export Dependence cover?
191 in 2024.
What is the world average commodity export dependence?
This site does not calculate a world average, which would depend on how countries are weighted. In the middle country of the 191 compared in 2024, the figure was 67.170%.
Is this UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD)’s own ranking?
No ranking is shown. UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD) publishes values only, and too many countries share the same value for an ordering to mean anything, so none is derived.
How often is the Commodity Export Dependence published?
This site holds 2 reference years, 2014–2024, all recalculated in UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD)’s 2026 report on one method — not 2 separate publications.
Where does the data come from, and can I download it?
From UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD), under CC BY 3.0 IGO. Read from the data files behind UNCTAD's State of Commodity Dependence 2026 explorer, using the full-precision file its charts use rather than the rounded map labels. The three commodity-group shares are published to two decimals and kept as published. Every edition is on this site’s Datasets pages as a full table, and downloads as a CSV file with every value unrounded.

How this page reads the numbers
- No rank or position is shown: UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD) publishes values only, and too many countries share the same value for an ordering to mean anything.
- This statistic has no better end, so the page describes higher and lower values and never calls a country a leader.
- A country is named at an end only when it holds that value alone. Where several share it, the page says how many and names none first.
- Values are stored exactly as published and trimmed only for display. “The middle country” is the median of the countries measured, not a world average.
The file itself, column by column — where it came from, what each column holds, and every edition as a CSV — is on its dataset page.
