About Burundi

Burundi’s western edge drops steeply to Lake Tanganyika, second in depth only to Baikal, whose waters hold hundreds of fish species found nowhere else. Above the shore the Congo–Nile ridge rises to the cool Kibira forest, and east of it a rolling plateau of terraced farms falls away towards Tanzania. At Rutovu a stone pyramid marks a spring that Burundians count as the southernmost source of the Nile. The highlands stay mild all year.

A kingdom took shape on the plateau from the seventeenth century under mwami kings and ganwa princes, and the sacred drum, karyenda, embodied the throne. Germany absorbed it around 1900, and Belgium ran it with Rwanda as Ruanda-Urundi from 1916. Prince Louis Rwagasore, the independence leader, was assassinated in October 1961, months before independence in July 1962. The monarchy fell in 1966, and violence between Hutu and Tutsi culminated in a civil war from 1993, wound down by a peace process begun at Arusha in 2000.

Royal drumming is Burundi’s signature art: drummers carry great drums on their heads, set them round the central karyenda and take turns to dance and play, a ritual UNESCO inscribed in 2014. Beans, cassava and bananas fill the plate, Lake Tanganyika supplies ndagala, tiny sardines dried on the beaches, and sorghum beer is shared from one pot through long straws. Vénuste Niyongabo won Olympic gold over five thousand metres in 1996. Arabica coffee is the chief export, with tea, gold and palm oil.

02Country Index 2026

Where it stands, topic by topic

Strongest first. Each position is Burundi’s place among the countries with a standing on that topic, built from a few key statistics chosen to measure different things.

All topics

Each standing is built from a few key statistics chosen to measure different things. Select a subject for Burundi’s readings on it, or see every statistic held for Burundi in the table further down this page.

03Highs and lows

Where Burundi stands out

The two ends of its own record: every statistic on which Burundi sits within ten places of the best or worst in the world, plus its strongest and weakest readings overall. Each is turned into a percentile — its place among every country measured — which is what lets a hunger score and a press-freedom rank be compared at all.

Sources and how to read them

How to read this page

  • The scores and ranks belong to their publishers. Nothing is adjusted, rescaled or re-ranked; each is reproduced from the edition named beside it. Where a row says position · derived, the publisher ranks nobody on that measure and the position is ours, made by ordering the published score.
  • Each statistic shows its newest edition, which is not always the edition the Country Index uses: the index pins every source to one data year so its average compares like with like.

How a standing is built from percentiles, why Burundi can move because other countries moved, and why publishers measure between 120 and 215 countries each are set out in full in how a standing is made and what a standing cannot tell you.
