01The country

About Uganda

Uganda lies on a plateau astride the equator, where Lake Victoria pours out into the Nile at Jinja. Much of the country is well-watered farmland, swamp and lake, and the river crosses it northwards through Murchison Falls, forcing its way through a cleft only a few metres wide. Along the western border the Rwenzori range and the volcanic Virungas rise above Lakes Albert and Edward, and the Bwindi forest shelters mountain gorillas. Karamoja, in the far north-east, is dry cattle country.

The kingdom of Buganda, on the northern shore of Lake Victoria, along with Bunyoro, Toro and Ankole, had organised courts long before British explorers came looking for the Nile’s source. Britain declared a protectorate in 1894 and ruled largely through Buganda’s chiefs. Independence came in 1962. Idi Amin’s rule from 1971 to 1979, which expelled the country’s Asian community, and years of conflict lasting into the mid-1980s followed.

Bark cloth beaten from the mutuba tree by the Baganda is recognised by UNESCO, and royal drums still mark the old kingdoms’ ceremonies. Matooke, green cooking bananas steamed in their own leaves, is the national staple, and the rolex, a chapati rolled around an omelette, is the street snack of every town. Coffee from the Lake Victoria crescent is a leading export, alongside gold, tea, fish and flowers, and oil was found beneath the Albertine Rift in 2006.

Where it stands, topic by topic

Strongest first. Each position is Uganda’s place among the countries with a standing on that topic, built from a few key statistics chosen to measure different things.

All topics

Each standing is built from a few key statistics chosen to measure different things. Select a subject for Uganda’s readings on it, or see every statistic held for Uganda in the table further down this page.

03Highs and lows

Where Uganda stands out

The two ends of its own record: every statistic on which Uganda sits within ten places of the best or worst in the world, plus its strongest and weakest readings overall. Each is turned into a percentile — its place among every country measured — which is what lets a hunger score and a press-freedom rank be compared at all.

Where Uganda does best10 of 14

Sources and how to read them

How to read this page

  • The scores and ranks belong to their publishers. Nothing is adjusted, rescaled or re-ranked; each is reproduced from the edition named beside it. Where a row says position · derived, the publisher ranks nobody on that measure and the position is ours, made by ordering the published score.
  • Each statistic shows its newest edition, which is not always the edition the Country Index uses: the index pins every source to one data year so its average compares like with like.

How a standing is built from percentiles, why Uganda can move because other countries moved, and why publishers measure between 120 and 215 countries each are set out in full in how a standing is made and what a standing cannot tell you.
