01The country
India lies in South Asia, occupying most of the Indian subcontinent between the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal. The Himalayas rise along its northern edge, the fertile plains of the Ganges stretch across the north, and the Deccan Plateau fills much of the south. Its climate is shaped by the monsoon, and ranges from alpine in the mountains to tropical along the coasts, with the Thar Desert in the north-west. New Delhi is the capital, and Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai and Bengaluru are major cities. India is home to a great variety of peoples and hundreds of languages; Hindi and English are used by the central government.
The subcontinent has been home to civilisations since the Indus Valley cities of the Bronze Age, and later to many kingdoms and empires, including the Maurya and Mughal empires. After a long period of British rule, India became independent in 1947 and a republic in 1950. It is the birthplace of Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism, and is known for monuments such as the Taj Mahal, for classical music and dance, and for its film industry. Its economy spans agriculture, manufacturing, and information technology and other services.

03Highs and lows
The two ends of its own record: every statistic on which India sits within ten places of the best or worst in the world, plus its strongest and weakest readings overall. Each is turned into a percentile — its place among every country measured — which is what lets a hunger score and a press-freedom rank be compared at all.
