01The country

About Maldives

The Maldives gave English the word atoll, from the local atholhu, and the country is made of little else: some two dozen atolls strung across the equator in the Indian Ocean, with well over a thousand coral islands. No natural ground rises much more than two metres. Two monsoons set the year, the dry north-east iruvai and the wet south-west hulhangu, and when plankton blooms in the wet season manta rays gather in their hundreds at Hanifaru Bay in Baa Atoll.

Settlers from southern India and Sri Lanka brought Buddhism, and ruined stupas survive on several islands. In 1153 the king converted to Islam, a change tradition credits to a visiting scholar, Abu al-Barakat. Cowrie shells travelled from here as money as far as Bengal and West Africa, and Ibn Battuta served as a judge in the 1340s. Muhammad Thakurufaanu drove out a Portuguese garrison in 1573. The sultanate became a British protectorate in 1887, independent in July 1965 and a republic in 1968.

Breakfast is mas huni, tuna with grated coconut, onion and chilli, scooped up with roshi flatbread. Boduberu drummers play faster and faster while dancers keep pace. Friday prayers halt the working week. Fishermen catch skipjack tuna one at a time with pole and line from wooden dhonis, and the catch is canned at Felivaru. The first resorts opened in 1972, and the rule of one island, one resort has turned scores of uninhabited islets into hotels, the core of the economy.

02Country Index 2026

Where it stands, topic by topic

Strongest first. Each position is Maldives’s place among the countries with a standing on that topic, built from a few key statistics chosen to measure different things.

All topics

Each standing is built from a few key statistics chosen to measure different things. Select a subject for Maldives’s readings on it, or see every statistic held for Maldives in the table further down this page.

03Highs and lows

Where Maldives stands out

The two ends of its own record: every statistic on which Maldives sits within ten places of the best or worst in the world, plus its strongest and weakest readings overall. Each is turned into a percentile — its place among every country measured — which is what lets a hunger score and a press-freedom rank be compared at all.

Where Maldives does best8

Sources and how to read them

How to read this page

  • The scores and ranks belong to their publishers. Nothing is adjusted, rescaled or re-ranked; each is reproduced from the edition named beside it. Where a row says position · derived, the publisher ranks nobody on that measure and the position is ours, made by ordering the published score.
  • Each statistic shows its newest edition, which is not always the edition the Country Index uses: the index pins every source to one data year so its average compares like with like.

How a standing is built from percentiles, why Maldives can move because other countries moved, and why publishers measure between 120 and 215 countries each are set out in full in how a standing is made and what a standing cannot tell you.
