About Namibia

Namibia is named after the Namib, a coastal desert where the cold Benguela Current brings fog but almost no rain. Red dunes tower over the clay pans of Sossusvlei, shipwrecks rust along the Skeleton Coast, and the welwitschia, a plant that may live a thousand years or more, grows on the gravel plains. Inland a high plateau gives way to the Kalahari. Fish River Canyon cuts into the south, and the white salt pan of Etosha shimmers in the north.

San hunters engraved giraffes, rhinos and footprints into the sandstone at Twyfelfontein thousands of years ago. Germany claimed the territory as South West Africa in 1884, and its troops crushed the Herero and Nama risings of 1904–08; most of the Herero and about half of the Nama died in battle, in the desert or in prison camps, killings Germany acknowledged as genocide in 2021. After the First World War South Africa took over and extended apartheid here, until a long struggle led by SWAPO won independence in March 1990.

Herero women wear long Victorian-style dresses with hats folded like cattle horns, and German colonial buildings line the seafront at Swakopmund. Grilled meat, kapana, sizzles at street stalls. Diamonds come from the beaches near Oranjemund and from the seabed offshore, lifted by specialised ships. Uranium comes from the Rössing and Husab mines in the Namib, trawlers out of Walvis Bay land hake, cattle ranches export beef, and visitors come for Etosha’s waterholes and the desert elephants of the north-west.

02Country Index 2026

Where it stands, topic by topic

Strongest first. Each position is Namibia’s place among the countries with a standing on that topic, built from a few key statistics chosen to measure different things.

All topics

Each standing is built from a few key statistics chosen to measure different things. Select a subject for Namibia’s readings on it, or see every statistic held for Namibia in the table further down this page.

03Highs and lows

Where Namibia stands out

The two ends of its own record: every statistic on which Namibia sits within ten places of the best or worst in the world, plus its strongest and weakest readings overall. Each is turned into a percentile — its place among every country measured — which is what lets a hunger score and a press-freedom rank be compared at all.

Sources and how to read them

How to read this page

  • The scores and ranks belong to their publishers. Nothing is adjusted, rescaled or re-ranked; each is reproduced from the edition named beside it. Where a row says position · derived, the publisher ranks nobody on that measure and the position is ours, made by ordering the published score.
  • Each statistic shows its newest edition, which is not always the edition the Country Index uses: the index pins every source to one data year so its average compares like with like.

How a standing is built from percentiles, why Namibia can move because other countries moved, and why publishers measure between 120 and 215 countries each are set out in full in how a standing is made and what a standing cannot tell you.
