01The country
Mexico lies in southern North America, bordered by the United States to the north and by Guatemala and Belize to the south, with coastlines on the Pacific Ocean, the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea. A high central plateau is framed by the Sierra Madre mountain ranges, and the country also includes the Baja California peninsula, the Yucatán Peninsula and several volcanoes. Climates range from desert in the north to tropical rainforest in the south. Mexico City is the capital, and Guadalajara, Monterrey and Puebla are major cities. Spanish is the most widely spoken language, and many Indigenous languages, such as Nahuatl and Maya languages, are also recognised.
Mexico was home to major civilisations, including the Olmec, the Maya and the Aztec, before Spanish conquest in the sixteenth century. The struggle for independence began in 1810 and succeeded in 1821. The country is known for ancient sites such as Teotihuacan and Chichén Itzá, for its cuisine, music and Day of the Dead traditions, and for painters such as Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. Its economy includes manufacturing, oil, mining, agriculture and tourism.

03Highs and lows
The two ends of its own record: every statistic on which Mexico sits within ten places of the best or worst in the world, plus its strongest and weakest readings overall. Each is turned into a percentile — its place among every country measured — which is what lets a hunger score and a press-freedom rank be compared at all.
