01The country

About Gabon

Gabon sits astride the Equator, and rainforest covers most of it. The Ogooué drains the greater part of the country, gathering rivers from the interior plateaus and meeting the Atlantic in a maze of channels near Port-Gentil. Grassy savanna breaks the forest at Lopé, and the Crystal Mountains rise in the north-west. At Loango the trees run down to empty beaches where elephants and hippos wander onto the sand, and a network of national parks, created in 2002, shelters lowland gorillas and mandrills.

Forest peoples such as the Baka were joined over many centuries by Bantu-speaking farmers, among them the Fang, Punu and Myene. Portuguese sailors arrived in the 1470s and are said to have named the Komo estuary after the gabão, a hooded cloak. France signed treaties with coastal chiefs from 1839 and in 1849 settled Africans freed from a captured slave ship at Libreville. Albert Schweitzer opened his hospital at Lambaréné in 1913, and Gabon became independent in August 1960.

Bwiti, an initiation religion combining ancestor worship with Christian elements, uses the bitter root of the iboga shrub in all-night ceremonies, and Fang masks hang in museums worldwide. In 1972 scientists found that natural nuclear chain reactions had run in the uranium ore at Oklo some two billion years ago. Offshore oil brings in most export earnings, manganese from Moanda rides the Transgabonais railway to the port of Owendo, and the forests yield okoumé, a soft wood prized for plywood.

Where it stands, topic by topic

Strongest first. Each position is Gabon’s place among the countries with a standing on that topic, built from a few key statistics chosen to measure different things.

Each standing is built from a few key statistics chosen to measure different things. Select a subject for Gabon’s readings on it, or see every statistic held for Gabon in the table further down this page.

03Highs and lows

Where Gabon stands out

The two ends of its own record: every statistic on which Gabon sits within ten places of the best or worst in the world, plus its strongest and weakest readings overall. Each is turned into a percentile — its place among every country measured — which is what lets a hunger score and a press-freedom rank be compared at all.

Sources and how to read them

How to read this page

  • The scores and ranks belong to their publishers. Nothing is adjusted, rescaled or re-ranked; each is reproduced from the edition named beside it. Where a row says position · derived, the publisher ranks nobody on that measure and the position is ours, made by ordering the published score.
  • Each statistic shows its newest edition, which is not always the edition the Country Index uses: the index pins every source to one data year so its average compares like with like.

How a standing is built from percentiles, why Gabon can move because other countries moved, and why publishers measure between 120 and 215 countries each are set out in full in how a standing is made and what a standing cannot tell you.

  • Statistics: 58 publishers, each named beside its numbers, with every edition and licence on the datasets pages.
