01The country
The Philippines is an archipelago in South-East Asia, made up of thousands of islands in the western Pacific Ocean. They are usually grouped into three main areas: Luzon in the north, the Visayas in the centre and Mindanao in the south. Many of the islands are mountainous and volcanic, and the country lies in a region often affected by typhoons and earthquakes. The climate is tropical and maritime, with wet and dry seasons. Manila is the capital, and Quezon City, Davao City and Cebu City are among its major cities. Filipino and English are the official languages, and many other languages, such as Cebuano and Ilocano, are widely spoken.
The islands were home to many communities and trading states before Spanish colonisation began in the sixteenth century. After more than three centuries of Spanish rule, the islands came under United States administration in 1898, and the Philippines became independent in 1946. The country is known for its beaches and coral reefs, the rice terraces of the Cordilleras, its festivals and its music. Its economy includes services such as business process outsourcing, remittances from Filipinos working abroad, electronics manufacturing, agriculture and tourism.
As Wikidata records them. Official languages are the least consistent — some countries list only a national language, others every regional one. Sources and licences.

03Highs and lows
The two ends of its own record: every statistic on which Philippines sits within ten places of the best or worst in the world, plus its strongest and weakest readings overall. Each is turned into a percentile — its place among every country measured — which is what lets a hunger score and a press-freedom rank be compared at all.
