01The country

About Guinea

Three of West Africa’s great rivers rise in Guinea: the Niger in the highlands of the south, the Senegal and the Gambia among the sandstone tablelands of the Fouta Djallon. The coast is mangrove estuary and rice field under torrential monsoon rains; the Fouta Djallon is cool upland pasture cut by cliffs and waterfalls; Upper Guinea is savanna along the young Niger around Kankan; and in the south-east the forest region climbs to Mount Nimba.

The upper Niger plains formed the core of the Mali empire, which Sundiata Keita founded in the thirteenth century; griots still sing his epic. In the eighteenth century Fula Muslims set up an Islamic state in the Fouta Djallon. Samori Touré fought the French advance until his capture in 1898. In 1958 Guinea rejected de Gaulle’s French Community and took its independence at once, the first French colony south of the Sahara to do so, under Ahmed Sékou Touré.

Fula, Malinké and Susu are the main peoples, and most Guineans are Muslim. After independence the state sponsored Les Ballets Africains and orchestras such as Bembeya Jazz, and at Niagassola griots guard the Sosso Bala, a balafon said to date from Sundiata’s time. Camara Laye’s L’Enfant noir recalls a Malinké childhood. Rice with groundnut or cassava-leaf sauce is the daily meal. Bauxite from Boké goes by rail to Kamsar, gold is dug around Siguiri, and the Simandou range holds iron ore.

Where it stands, topic by topic

Strongest first. Each position is Guinea’s place among the countries with a standing on that topic, built from a few key statistics chosen to measure different things.

Where Guinea stands out

The two ends of its own record: every statistic on which Guinea sits within ten places of the best or worst in the world, plus its strongest and weakest readings overall. Each is turned into a percentile — its place among every country measured — which is what lets a hunger score and a press-freedom rank be compared at all.

Sources and how to read them

How to read this page

  • The scores and ranks belong to their publishers. Nothing is adjusted, rescaled or re-ranked; each is reproduced from the edition named beside it. Where a row says position · derived, the publisher ranks nobody on that measure and the position is ours, made by ordering the published score.
  • Each statistic shows its newest edition, which is not always the edition the Country Index uses: the index pins every source to one data year so its average compares like with like.

How a standing is built from percentiles, why Guinea can move because other countries moved, and why publishers measure between 120 and 215 countries each are set out in full in how a standing is made and what a standing cannot tell you.
