74 reference years (1950–2023), covering 222 countries, from World Population Prospects 2024 — read from the Population Division's own CSV download, not from the World Bank's copy. ⚠ These are not 74 published reports: WPP is revised every two years and each revision restates the whole history, so `restatedByReport` names the revision this came from. ⚠ ESTIMATES ONLY. WPP publishes 1950–2100, and everything from 2024 on is a projection carrying eighteen variants; a projection is a model output, not a reading, so the series stops at 2023. ⚠ Not the World Bank's SP.POP.TOTL: the Bank blends the UN's estimates with national statistical offices and Eurostat, and the two disagree for 72 of the 214 countries both carry — China by 11.9 million in 2023. ⚠ A statistic, not an index, and one with no better end at all: a large population is not a good or a bad result, and nobody ranks countries on it. Stored as whole people, which is the one rounding AGENTS.md sanctions — the source gives thousands to three decimals, the same number in different units. ⚠ Three registry entities have no WPP row because the UN does not estimate them separately: Channel Islands, Northern Cyprus (counted within Cyprus) and Somaliland (within Somalia).
