34 reference years (1990–2023), 170 to 195 countries. How many years of schooling a child starting today can expect to complete, if current enrolment rates hold for the rest of their education. It is the FORWARD-LOOKING half of the HDI’s education dimension, and best read against `mean-years-schooling`, which is the backward-looking half: a country that has just fixed its schools scores well here and poorly there, and the gap between the two is roughly how long it will take for that fix to reach the adult population. ⚠ Not 34 published editions: the 2025 Human Development Report recalculates every year on one methodology. ⚠ It is a PROJECTION of current enrolment, not a record of what anyone completed — a country whose schools empty next year would still score well this year. UNDP publishes no rank for it, so none is stored; the POSITION on the statistics page is derived here by ordering the score and labelled as ours. No two countries tie in 2023: 195 distinct values for 195 countries.
