The CIVICUS Monitor scores how far people in a country may organise, speak and protest, and sorts them into five ratings: open, narrowed, obstructed, repressed and closed. Both are stored, the score in the headline column and the rating beside it. ⚠ THE SCORE IS CIVICUS’S OWN NUMBER, not an encoding of the five categories. That was the obvious worry with this indicator and it was checked at source: the CIVICUS API publishes a 0–100 `current_score`, and for all 198 countries it matches the score attached to their newest rating exactly. Nothing here is inferred. ⚠ ONE EDITION ONLY. Each country carries a rating history, but it holds several entries per year, minutes apart, with very different scores — working revisions rather than annual editions. Picking one per year would be picking arbitrarily, so only the current rating is imported; the series will grow an edition a year from here. ⚠ Greenland has a rating but no score and is not imported. ⚠ CIVICUS ranks nobody, so no rank is stored; the POSITION shown on the statistics page is derived here by ordering the score, and labelled as ours.
