Consumption-Based CO₂ Emissions

34 years, 1990–2023 · 120 countries · 3 measures

This counts the carbon dioxide from fossil fuels and cement that goes into everything a country consumes, wherever in the world it was emitted. The steel, electronics and clothes a country imports carry the emissions of the factories that made them, so this is the fairer reading for a country that buys its manufactured goods abroad.

This site holds every year from 1990 to 2023, read from Global Carbon Project’s own data and stored exactly as published.

Precision

The headline is stored to 15 decimals, as published.

Rounded by this site

Never. Tables on screen may show fewer decimals; the files never do.

Changed by this site

Reshaped into one row per country: regional and income-group totals are left out, only the columns listed are kept, each row gets its ISO 3166 code, and some country names are brought to one spelling. No value is recalculated, rescaled or rounded.

From the Global Carbon Project's own national emissions workbook. The consumption figures come from a trade model that covers only the countries in its trade tables, so most small economies are absent.
