The share of young people who finish upper secondary school — the top of the schooling ladder, and the stage where the gap between rich and poor countries is widest: the leaders are above 90% while the lowest are under 10%. Female and male rates are stored beside the headline. ⚠ MODELLED DATA, like the primary completion rate: UIS harmonises MICS, DHS and national surveys with administrative data rather than publishing only what ministries report, which is what gives it 164 countries a year instead of the 50-odd the reported series manages. The recent years are therefore model estimates for countries that have not surveyed lately — nowcasts of an observed trend, not scenario projections. ⚠ ADDED AS A KEY ON 2026-09-12 to fix a balance problem, not a coverage one: three of this subject's four keys measured primary school, so a country's education standing was decided by what happens to its under-twelves. This replaced the pre-primary enrolment rate as a key; that indicator stays on the site as context. ⚠ LOWER SECONDARY COMPLETION IS NOT ON THIS SITE AS A KEY and cannot be: it correlates 0.93 with primary completion, over the Country Index's 0.92 bar.
