23 reference years (2001-2023), covering 165 to 167 countries, produced by the FAO and pulled through the World Bank indicator API (SN.ITK.DEFC.ZS). It estimates the share of a population whose habitual food consumption is too low to sustain a normal, active life. ⚠ The FAO floors the published figure at 2.5%, so the dozens of countries sitting exactly on 2.5 are not tied - that is the publisher declining to distinguish below its own margin of error, and the top of this table should be read as a band rather than a ranking. ⚠ ⚠ A statistic, not an index: no rank is published. A POSITION is derived here (2026-09-10) by ordering the score, worst first. ⚠ IT ENDS IN A 62-WAY TIE: the FAO writes “<2.5” instead of a number for its best performers, and those 62 countries all share position 104, the last one. The FAO declines to separate them and neither does this — the top of the table is where the information is.
