Employment in agriculture (% of total employment)Neither end is better — this is a shape, not a scorePublished by International Labour Organization (ILO)
35 reference years (1991–2025), covering 182 to 187 countries, from the ILO’s modelled estimates via the World Bank’s indicator API (SL.AGR.EMPL.ZS). The share of working people employed in farming, forestry and fishing. ⚠ NEITHER END IS BETTER, so this indicator carries no good/bad colouring anywhere on the site and does not feed its topics’ rankings — it is charted on them, not scored by them. A falling share is what every economy that industrialised did, and it is also what happens when rural work disappears faster than anything replaces it — the number cannot tell those two apart. ⚠ MODELLED rather than measured, so that one definition applies to every country instead of 187 national ones. That is what makes the comparison possible and what makes each figure an estimate. ⚠ These are not separate published reports — `restatedByReport` names the World Development Indicators release they were pulled from. ⚠ A statistic, not an index. ⚠ No rank is published. A POSITION is derived here (2026-09-10) by ordering the score LARGEST FIRST, and it is a SIZE ORDER rather than a league table: this measure has no better end, so position 1 names the country with the biggest figure and says nothing about how that country is doing. The change arrows stay grey for the same reason, and the indicator is still left out of the Country Index.

The share of working people employed in farming, forestry and fishing — an ILO modelled estimate served through the World Bank's indicator API (SL.AGR.EMPL.ZS). ⚠ Neither end is better. A falling share is what every economy that industrialised did, and also what happens when rural work disappears faster than anything replaces it. Modelled rather than measured, so that one definition applies to every country. The ILO does not rank countries on it, so no rank is stored and none is derived.
