20 reference years (2005–2024), covering 100 to 157 countries, from FAOSTAT's Land Use domain, with the areas in hectares stored beside the share. It is the positive counterpart to the fertiliser and pesticide intensity measures already on the site — together the three describe how hard a country farms its land, in both directions. ⚠ ORGANIC IS NOT A SYNONYM FOR SUSTAINABLE: organic yields are typically lower, so a larger organic share can mean more land used to grow the same food, and land is the scarcest input in most of the arguments about farming and climate. It sorts higher-first because that is the direction every policy target in this area is written in, not because the trade-off is settled. ⚠ IT DEPENDS ON CERTIFICATION, so a country with no certification system reports almost nothing however it actually farms — which is most of the low end of this table. ⚠ 2004 reports 35 countries and is not imported. The FAO ranks nobody, so no rank is stored; the POSITION is derived here and labelled as ours.
