63 reference years (1961–2023), covering 149 to 181 countries, from FAOSTAT and served through the World Bank's indicator API (AG.LND.CREL.HA). Hectares harvested for wheat, rice, maize, barley, sorghum and the rest. ⚠ NEITHER END IS BETTER: this is an AREA, so it tracks a country's size and geography before it tracks its farming, and Russia and Malta cannot be compared on it. Its value is alongside CEREAL YIELD, already on the site — together they separate a country feeding itself by farming BETTER from one feeding itself by farming MORE LAND. ⚠ HARVESTED area, not planted area, so a failed harvest reduces it and a drought year shows up as lost land. ⚠ ZERO IS A REAL READING: Kuwait harvested no cereals at all in 1961, and several desert and island states still do not. ⚠ 2024 reports 79 countries and is not imported.
