34 reference years (1990–2023), growing from 80 to 172 countries. The index measures the human development lost to inequality between women and men across reproductive health, empowerment and the labour market. ⚠ READ THE DIRECTION CAREFULLY: a LOWER score is better (0 is full equality), and rank 1 is the LEAST unequal country — the same combination the Global Hunger Index has, and the reason `rankOneIs` exists as a separate field. ⚠ These are not 34 published editions: the 2025 Human Development Report recalculates every year on one current methodology, the same shape as the HDI it ships alongside. UNDP states an official rank for 2023 only; the other 33 years are derived by ordering the score, verified to reproduce all 172 of UNDP's own 2023 ranks exactly before anything is written.
