Share of the cereal supply that is imported (%)Neither end is better — this is a shape, not a scorePublished by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO)
22 reference years (2001–2022), covering 155 to 163 countries, from FAOSTAT's Suite of Food Security Indicators. How much of a country's cereal supply comes from abroad — a vulnerability measure that the food production indices already on the site cannot show. ⚠ NEITHER END IS BETTER: a high figure is a real exposure for a country that could feed itself and does not, and simply geography for a city-state or a desert. Singapore imports essentially all of its cereals and is not failing at anything. ⚠ NEGATIVE VALUES ARE PUBLISHED AND REAL, and they go a long way below zero: the ratio is net imports over DOMESTIC SUPPLY, so for a large exporter the denominator is small next to the net exports — Paraguay reads −1,894% and Bulgaria −1,016%. The ceiling is 100 by construction, because a country cannot import more than all of its supply. ⚠ A THREE-YEAR AVERAGE, labelled by the MIDDLE year of its window, which is the convention the World Bank uses for the FAO food security series already on this site. ⚠ NO POSITION IS DERIVED: sixteen countries sit at exactly 100%, which is 9.9% of the field — a ceiling pile-up, and ordering it would invent a distinction the data does not contain.
