37 reference years (1989–2025), covering 169 to 196 countries — a full balanced panel, so a country absent from a year is genuinely absent rather than unreported. The figure is UCDP's best estimate of everyone killed in organized violence inside a country's borders, split into its three published components: state-based conflict, non-state conflict and one-sided violence against civilians, with UCDP's low and high estimates stored alongside. ⚠ THESE ARE ABSOLUTE COUNTS, NOT RATES. There is no population denominator in UCDP's file, so a large country tends to sit worse than a small one and this cannot be read as how dangerous a place is to live. It measures the SCALE of organized violence. ⚠ Most of the world is at zero — 138 of 196 countries in 2025 — so rows are ordered worst first rather than best first, which is the reverse of every other indicator here. ⚠ UCDP HAS NO PALESTINE ROW. Its country list carries Israel and no Palestine, Gaza or West Bank, so deaths in the territories are counted under Israel (14,563 in 2025). That is the publisher's coding decision and it is essential context for reading that figure. ⚠ Three states that dissolved by 1992 — Czechoslovakia, the German Democratic Republic and South Yemen — are in UCDP's panel and are not imported, because every row here keys to a present-day country. ⚠ ⚠ No rank is published. A POSITION is derived here (2026-09-10) by ordering the death count, highest first. ⚠ MOST OF THE WORLD SHARES THE LAST POSITION: 138 of 196 countries recorded no deaths in organized violence in 2025, and all 138 sit at position 59. The top of this table is the whole story; the tail is one fact repeated 138 times. ⚠ It counts PEOPLE rather than a rate, so the order is partly a function of how many people are there to be killed.
