Gross secondary enrolment ratio (%)Higher is better — rank 1 leadsPublished by UNESCO Institute for Statistics (UIS)
50 reference years (1971-2024), covering 84 to 156 countries, produced by the UNESCO Institute for Statistics and pulled through the World Bank indicator API (SE.SEC.ENRR). ⚠ This is a GROSS ratio, so it can legitimately exceed 100%: it divides everyone enrolled in secondary school, at any age, by the population of official secondary-school age, and repeaters and over-age pupils push several countries well past 100 (Monaco is at 158 in 2024). A figure above 100 is therefore not an error and does not mean universal enrolment. ⚠ There is a five-year hole from 1995 to 1998 - UNESCO reported too few countries in those years to publish, so the trend line has a real gap rather than an interpolation. ⚠ A statistic, not an index: no rank is published, so none is stored; the POSITION shown on the statistics page is derived here by ordering the score, and labelled as ours.

Gross enrolment ratios as published by the UNESCO Institute for Statistics and served through the World Bank's indicator API (SE.SEC.ENRR) — total secondary enrolment of any age as a share of the population of official secondary-school age. UNESCO does not rank countries on it, so no rank is stored and none is derived.
