Agricultural Emissions Intensity

34 years, 1990–2023 · 190 countries · 3 measures

This is how much greenhouse gas a country's farming emits for each dollar's worth of crops and livestock it produces — methane from cattle and rice paddies, nitrous oxide from soils and manure, and the burning of crop residues and savanna — as estimated by FAO. Because it is per dollar of output, it compares how emissions-heavy farming systems are, whatever their size.

This site holds every year from 1990 to 2023, read from FAO’s own data and stored exactly as published.

Precision

The headline is stored to 2 decimals, as published.

Rounded by this site

Never. Tables on screen may show fewer decimals; the files never do.

Changed by this site

Reshaped into one row per country: regional and income-group totals are left out, only the columns listed are kept, each row gets its ISO 3166 code, and some country names are brought to one spelling. No value is recalculated, rescaled or rounded.

FAOSTAT's Emissions Indicators domain, read from FAO's own bulk download. FAO computes the ratio from its own emissions estimates and its value of agricultural production; emissions per hectare of farmland and per person are stored beside it.
