Average factor incomes must rise by to reach $28 a dayHigher is worse — rank 1 is worst affectedPublished by World Bank Group
21 reference years (2002–2022), covering 68 to 94 countries, from the World Bank’s own Poverty and Inequality Platform. The average factor by which incomes would have to be multiplied to reach a prosperity standard of $28 a day. ⚠ NOT A PERCENTAGE AND NOT A HEADCOUNT — it is a MULTIPLIER. 1.0 means the average person is already at the standard; 10 means incomes would have to rise tenfold. Every other poverty measure on this site is a share of the population, and reading this one the same way would be badly wrong. ⚠ IT IS NOT THE LEGATUM PROSPERITY INDEX, which is a different publisher measuring a different thing; the names are close and the measures are unrelated. ⚠ Because it weights the poorest most heavily, it keeps moving after a country has eliminated extreme poverty — which is what it is for. ⚠ THE COUNTRY SET CHANGES EVERY YEAR, as with every survey-based measure here. ⚠ Read from PIP rather than the Bank’s indicator API (SI.SPR.PGAP), which rounds the same figure to one decimal — comparing 2022 row for row, ALL 72 values differ and PIP carries more decimals in every one. ⚠ No rank is published, so none is stored; the POSITION on the statistics page is derived here by ordering the score and labelled as ours.

The average factor by which incomes would have to be multiplied to reach a prosperity standard of $28 a day, exactly as published by the World Bank's Poverty and Inequality Platform. ⚠ NOT A PERCENTAGE and not a headcount: it is a multiplier, so 1.0 means the average person is already at the standard and 10 means incomes would have to rise tenfold. ⚠ It is also NOT the Legatum Prosperity Index, which is a different publisher measuring a different thing. Read from PIP rather than the Bank's indicator API, which rounds it to one decimal.
