The unweighted average of the inequality in a country’s health, education and income — how unevenly the three building blocks of human development are actually spread, on a 0–100 scale where 0 is perfect equality. Best read next to `inequality-adjusted-hdi`, which is the other half of the same idea: this one measures how much inequality there is, the IHDI measures what development survives it. ⚠ Not 14 published editions: the 2025 Human Development Report recalculates every year on one methodology. ⚠ It is NOT a measure of income inequality — the Gini index is, and the two disagree often, because a country can distribute money unevenly and schooling evenly. UNDP publishes no rank for the coefficient, so none is stored; the POSITION shown on the statistics page is derived here by ordering the score, and labelled as ours. No two countries tie: the 2023 edition holds 169 distinct values for 169 countries.
