Methane Emissions

56 years, 1970–2025 · 207 countries

This is how much methane a country releases in a year — from cattle and other livestock, rice paddies, leaks from oil and gas systems, coal mines, landfills and waste water. Methane is the second most important greenhouse gas after carbon dioxide: it lasts less long in the air but traps far more heat per tonne.

This site holds every year from 1970 to 2025, read from EDGAR’s own data and stored exactly as published.

Rounded by this site

Never. Tables on screen may show fewer decimals; the files never do.

Changed by this site

Reshaped into one row per country: regional and income-group totals are left out, only the columns listed are kept, each row gets its ISO 3166 code, and some country names are brought to one spelling. No value is recalculated, rescaled or rounded.

From the European Commission Joint Research Centre's own EDGAR database, in gigagrams (thousand tonnes) of methane rather than carbon-dioxide equivalent.

Methane is the second most important greenhouse gas after carbon dioxide: it lasts less long in the air but traps far more heat per tonne.

Which years of the Methane Emissions can I download?

All 56, from 1970 to 2025, each as a CSV file, or every year together in one CSV.

Does EDGAR rank countries on it?

No, and this site does not order it either. The files hold values only.

Can I use it commercially?

Yes, under CC BY 4.0, with credit to EDGAR. The licence text is linked on this page.
