What share of a year’s output a country put into building things rather than consuming them — fixed assets such as roads, plant and housing, plus the change in inventories, which is why the figure can go slightly negative. ⚠ A STRUCTURAL SHARE, NOT A SCORE. A high investment rate describes what an economy is doing with its output, not how well it is doing it, and the ordering here is a reading convention rather than a judgement.
