The share of the population below $8.30 a day at 2021 purchasing power parities — the Bank’s UPPER-MIDDLE-INCOME poverty line. ⚠ WHY A SECOND LINE. The $3.00 extreme-poverty line already on the site reads near zero across most of Europe, Latin America and East Asia, so it says almost nothing about the middle-income countries where most of the world now lives. This line does. ⚠ It is a HIGHER line, not a better one: the two measure different thresholds of the same distribution and neither is the true poverty rate. ⚠ THE COUNTRY SET CHANGES EVERY YEAR, exactly as it does for the $3.00 line and for the same reason — a country missing from an edition did not run a survey. ⚠ Read from PIP rather than the Bank’s indicator API (SI.POV.UMIC), which rounds the same figure to one decimal — comparing 2022 row for row, 59 of 72 values differ and PIP carries more decimals in every one. ⚠ Fetched with a SECOND request at `povline=8.3`, because PIP computes poverty against whichever line is asked for; which survey the Bank published for a contested country-year is settled once on the $3.00 response and reused. ⚠ No rank is published, so none is stored; the POSITION on the statistics page is derived here by ordering the score and labelled as ours.
